True Light Family Resource Center Elects 2017 Board of Directors

Kansas City, Missouri - True Light Family Resource Center a 501© charitable organization whose sole mission is to serve the homeless in Kansas City, recently elected four new members to serve on their 2017 Board of Directors. The board consists of thirteen members, all from the Kansas City area, and at a recent board meeting President, Vicki Copp welcomed the newest members, Carla Hayes with BHC RHODES, Katie Donaldson with Nazarene Theological Seminary, Shannon Neal, Arvest Bank and Debbie Swearingen with CommunityAmerica Credit Union.

True Light leaders have also been strategically restructuring the board to better utilize the talents of volunteers and gain exposure for the organization. There is a concentrated effort on fundraising in 2017 and providing opportunities for internships among college students.

True Light Family Resource Center, located in Midtown, currently sees up to 100 people weekly who benefit from services provided by True Light such as counseling provided by UMKC interns, a clothing donation bank, Happy Bottoms and Giving the Basics to name a few. On Saturdays, up to 300 of Kansas City’s homeless are served breakfast in True Light’s new kitchen. The board focused over the last four years on funding raising to build the new kitchen due to the increase of homeless being served. The amount needed was approximately $181,000 based on estimates from private contractors and architects. Funding was primarily through pledges and various grants.

True Light Family Resource Center, a 501© charitable organization, was founded in 2006 by Pastor Alice Piggee-Wallack. True Light serves individuals and families in Kansas City who are homeless, marginalized or living below the poverty level. Within the True Light organization there are two entities, Emancipation Station, a day shelter, and Freedom House, a transition program for homeless and single adult women.
